What Is Server-Side Tracking — and Why Your Meta Pixel Misses Sales

Ad blockers, iOS privacy features and Safari's cookie limits all stop browser pixels from reporting. Server-side tracking sends your events from a server instead — here is how it works and what it does and doesn't fix.

The problem with browser-only tracking

For years every ad platform asked you to paste a JavaScript pixel on your website. The visitor's browser loads the page, runs the pixel, and reports to Meta, Google or TikTok directly. That only works if the browser lets it.

Increasingly it doesn't. Ad blockers block requests to known tracking domains. iOS asks users whether apps may track them. Safari shortens the life of cookies set by scripts. Every one of these quietly removes conversions from what your ad platform sees — and you make budget decisions on what is left.

What server-side tracking means

Instead of the browser talking to Meta, a server does. The visitor's browser sends a small request to your own domain; the server adds what it knows (order details, hashed customer email and phone, cookies), and forwards the event to Meta's Conversions API, Google, TikTok and the rest.

  • Requests to your own domain aren't on ad-blocker lists of tracking domains.
  • Once the event reaches the server, nothing in the browser can drop it on the way to Meta.
  • For WooCommerce and Shopify, the Purchase can come straight from the order itself — no browser involved at all.
  • Hashed email and phone sent from the server help Meta match the event to the right person.

What it doesn't do

Server-side tracking is not magic. Page views and add-to-carts still start in the browser, so a visitor who blocks all JavaScript is still invisible for those. And sending more events only helps if they are the right events — sending fake Cash-on-Delivery orders as purchases from a server is just as harmful as sending them from a pixel.

The usual way: a Google Tag Manager server container

Most server-side setups are built on a Google Tag Manager server container: you configure tags, triggers and variables for each platform, and pay for hosting the container. It is powerful, and it is a project — usually one for a developer or an agency.

The PixelMili way

PixelMili is built for stores that don't want that project. Install the WooCommerce plugin, connect Shopify with one paste, or add one script tag to any other site. Then add your Pixel ID and access token for each platform in Settings. There is no container to configure, and PixelMili handles deduplication, hashing, retries and Cash-on-Delivery timing for you.

You can check every event in the live event feed, and the Orders report shows how many of your real orders each platform actually received.

Send every real order to Meta, TikTok and Google — without GTM.
